Field-proven in operations around the world, Shell and Wood have recently announced an exclusive license arrangement to distribute, develop and install this technology for all operators.

Wood, an industry leader in upstream process digital twin technology and flow assurance consultancy services, continues to expand its solutions with Shell's Smart Choke technology. This technology, a field-proven solution to liquid slugging and slug management, is now available to all operators through this exclusive license agreement.

Our partnership with Shell has allowed Wood to develop a turn-key commercial product that reduces risk, improves technical outcomes, and incorporates Wood’s transformational digital twin platform to help producers optimise operations, extend asset life, and mitigate costly downtime.

As hydrocarbon production assets mature, the accumulation and slugging of liquid can result in integrity and operational issues. These operational issues can lead to environmental impacts, high replacement costs, significant downtime, and potentially even more severe abandonment costs for assets nearing the end of their operating life.

The Smart Choke is a low-cost, active slug suppression device for pipeline-riser systems. It is used to reduce the severity of liquid surge and slugging on oil and gas production assets.

Based on over 20 years of production experience in field proven technology, Shell’s specialised algorithms are applied to target choke actuation to reduce the supress and control slugging behaviour in upstream reception facilities.
